Joyce Shaarda

Joyce Irene Shaarda, age 74, of McBain, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at her home in the presence of her loved ones.  Joyce was born on February 15, 1944, the second of four children to Jacob and Nellie (Boven) Vander Wal.  She married Donald Shaarda on April 24, 1964.  She was a homemaker her entire life and she loved being a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  She loved Jesus and was a member of the Vogel Center Christian Reformed Church. 
Joyce enjoyed gardening, reading and playing the piano.  She worked at several jobs in her lifetime, including as a secretary at Blick Dillon Insurance where she cheerfully greeted customers.  She reached out to comfort others, sending cards and providing meals and baked treats.  Her grandchildren were her greatest joy and she was happiest when they came to visit. 
  She is survived by her children Brenda (Matthew) Hamacher, Douglas (Amanda) Shaarda, Daniel (Amy) Shaarda, and Rachel (Bradley) Lamkin; grandchildren Cary (Elizabeth) Hamacher, Alex, Madeline and Sophia Hamacher, Nathan (Kayla) Shaarda, Abigail (Gonzalo) Mejia, Jessie and Lizzy Nowland, Alex and Quinn Wekwert, Jacob, Anna, Emma, Kathryn and Benjamin Shaarda, and Zachary Lamkin; and great-grandchildren Liam Hamacher, Justin and Jaxson Shaarda, and Isabel Zink,  along with siblings Muriel (John) Ebels, Diane (Sidney) Kuipers, and Nick (Deanna) Vander Wal, and in-laws Ed (Norma) Shaarda, Lillian (Doug) Langan, Rose (John) Van Dyke, Paul (Carole) Shaarda, and Mark (Mary) Shaarda and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family. 
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents Jacob and Nellie Vander Wal, father- and mother-in-law Robert and Betty Shaarda, and granddaughter Ruby Jewel Lamkin. 

Funeral services will be held at the Lucas Christian Reformed Church at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 14, Rev. Adam Barton will be officiating. Burial will take place 2:00 P.M. at Mount View Cemetery in McBain following the luncheon. Visitation will be held at the Burkholder Family Funeral Home on Friday from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.  Memorial contributions can be made to Northern Michigan Christian School or Life Resources of Northern Michigan.  The Burkholder Family Funeral Home in McBain is in charge of the funeral arrangements and thoughts and prayers may be left at
