Edward VanHouten, age 90 of Marion, passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2024 at his home. He was born on September 19, 1934 in Cadillac to Peter and Mina (VanFleet) VanHouten. He served in the U.S. Army for two years. He married Dolores Otten in 1956 in Grand Rapids and she preceded him in death. On March 31, 2005 he married Joyce Y. VanHouten at his home on Sapphire Lake in Lake City. He had been an equipment operator in underground work. He was a former member of Covenant Christian Reformed Church of Grand Rapids and was presently a member of the Lucas Christian Reformed Church, he served on the consistory at both churches. He enjoyed the Tigers, reading, putter farming, raising alpaca’s, traveling and rodeos.
He is survived by his wife Joyce Y. VanHouten of Marion, children; Laurie (Bruce) Lemke of Grand Rapids, Rick (Lisa) VanHouten of Wyoming, Vicki (Dean) Heetderks of Saranac, and Kathy (Kurt) Fryling of Wyoming, along with stepchildren; Steve VanHouten, Dan (Jan) VanHouten both of Marion, Rachele VanHouten of Cadillac, and Heidi (Bob) Agema of Falmouth, grandchildren; Adam Lemke, Justin Lemke, Holli-Noelle (Jeff) Dueck, Morgen (Amanda) Heetderks, Tanner (Sydney) Heetderks, Madison (Carter) Hess, Katie (Jason) Noorman, and Megan (Hansen) Bellows, great-grandchildren; Charlie and baby sister due any day Dueck, Brooks Heetderks, and Walker Hess, step-grandchildren; Stephanie VanHouten, Samantha VanHouten, Chad (Kallena) VanHouten, Danielle (Justin) Foster, Joshua (Shayanne) VanHouten, Shelby VanHouten, Kayla (Paul) Barber, Carter Wellman, Chase Wellman, Cheyene Agema, Kodee Agema, Blaze Agema, step great-grandchildren; Wynn VanHouten, Cross VanHouten, Madeliene Foster, Hugh Foster, Jackson and Lee VanHouten, Oakley Wellman and sister in-law Agnes VanHouten.
Edward is preceded in death by his parents, family members Chum VanHouten, Hilda (Harvey) Loeks, Lucille Bode, Anna (John) Vennema, Leonard VanHouten, Bill (Betty) VanHouten, Dorthy VanSetten, Henry (Lois) VanHouten, Herman (Reta) VanHouten, Warren VanHouten, Jerry Bogard, Ruth (Marvin) TeBos, Grace Pluger, Esther VanHouten, Lois VanHouten, and step-daughter in-law Brenda VanHouten.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 26, 2024 at the Lucas Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Todd Kuperus officiating. A luncheon will take place following the service Burial will take place in the Richland Township Cemetery with the Cadillac Area Honor Guard doing military rites. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4-7PM at the Lucas Christian Reformed Church. Memorial contributions can be made out to The Cadillac Veterans Memorial Park and or a Christian School of your choice. The family is being served by the Burkholder Family Funeral Home of McBain.
