Beverly Ann Shankwiler

Beverly Ann Shankwiler died May 18, 2018. Born December 14, 1926 in Detroit to Ward and Frances Reed. She was married to Donald Shankwiler on September 13, 1947.

Beverly graduated from Highland Park High School. Attended the Sparrow Hospital three year Nursing Program and earned her R.N. Degree in 1947. Fifteen years later she followed her interest in art by enrolling at Eastern Michigan University. She earned her B.A. and M.A. while there and was invited to join the faculty of the Art Department. Later, while on Sabbatical leave, she earned her M.F.A. at Bowling Green State University, in Ohio. She retired Professor Emeritus from Eastern Michigan University.

During her time on Eastern Michigan University staff she taught sculpture and drawing. She had exhibitions of her work in many of the State Colleges and Universities, and in galleries in Michigan, Ohio and New York. As a teacher she became a valuable and trusted mentor to many young university women.

After retirement, working in steel became an issue and she switched to the field of quilts. In time she gave many “trunk‘ shows of her work plus many quilts to children and grandchildren. One of her quilts is in the State of Michigan Art Collection.

Beverly was an inspiration not only to her family but to all that knew her.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Don Shankwiler, her son Ward Shankwiler and Grandson Donald E. Shankwiler

She is survived by her daughter Donna (Shankwiler) and Dean Williams, Rebecca Shankwiler Brown and Curtis Wills, and Craig Shankwiler; her grandchildren, Glenn Williams, Melissa Shankwiler and Barb Peifer, Michelle Shankwiler, Corinne (Brown) and Jamie Pierce, Jessica R. Brown and Spencer Wills, and great grandchildren.
