Roy Lewis Vomastek

Osteopathic Physician

Vomastek, Roy Lewis -

Roy Lewis Vomastek, born January 17th, 1932, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 4th, 2017, surrounded by a family united in prayer and song.  From a modest childhood, Roy grew up to lead a vibrant life, including his Army service in Japan during the Korean War, his love of family and friends, and his many travels for his passions, fishing and golf.

Roy touched countless lives through his passion, generosity, indomitable spirit, and love.  He was a man who saw the best in others, and a man who never failed to offer his help and support when asked.  People across the country and around the globe called him friend.  Roy spoke often of how blessed he felt to have these friendships.

Roy is survived by Shirley, his wife of nearly 63 years, his sons Andrew, Edward, and Daniel, his daughter Rebecca, his daughters in law Holly and Tamara, and seven grandchildren whom he adored, Caity Rose, Madison, Abigale, Chloe, Sophia, Will, and Ella Kate.

Roy will be remembered as a kind, caring country doctor, an unorthodox farmer, a skilled pilot, a somewhat reckless fisherman, a singer of Japanese song, a legend on the golf course where he appeared in four USGA Senior Amateurs all after the age of 70, and most importantly as a good man.  To his family, Roy will also be remembered as a loving and caring father and grandfather, committed to the success of his progenies. He will ever remain in our hearts.

Roy’s family will host a private celebration of life at his favorite place, Crystal Downs Country Club, later this week, where a scholarship program for the caddies and bag attendants will be established in his name.  In lieu of flowers, donations to this scholarship program may be directed to Community Foundation/CDCC Scholarship Dr. Roy Vomastek Fund, 250 E. Front Street, Traverse City, MI 49684.

Roy’s remarkable life and golf career are immortalized in a biography “Roy: The 78-Year-Old Champion” which is available on Amazon
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on October 28, 2017 at the McBain Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 110 N. Hemlock St., McBain, from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Funeral arrangements are being made by the Burkholder Family Funeral Home in McBain. Thoughts and prayers may be left at

Let's face it, Roy is a Crystal Downs legend, a remarkable man that lived life to the fullest. I will always respect and admire him for all that he achieved. If there is a heaven, it must surely have a golf course and you can bet Roy is up there teeing off with a big smile on his face.

One of the nicest men I have ever known. Also one of the best golfers I have ever played against. Needless to say, he beat my brains out the only time I played against him. Rest in peace Roy.
