Kenneth Vander Heide

Reverend

Kenneth Vander Heide, age 86, went to be with his Lord on July 30, 2017. He was born to Andrew and Marie (Verstraate) Vander Heide of McBain, Michigan on July 13, 1931 in the house where he passed away, held by his loving wife of 66 years, Sena (DeVries) Vander Heide. Ken was called to the ministry of the Word and Sacrament and attended Calvin College and Seminary from 1960-1968. As an ordained pastor in the Christian Reformed Church, Ken pastored churches in Valentine, NE (Lakeview), Lodgepole, SD (Holland Center), and Pantego, NC (Terra Ceia). He finished his formal career as a hospital chaplain in Albuquerque, NM. Ken retired in 1994. In his encore career he and Sena enjoyed serving as campground hosts for three years with Alaska State Parks and three years in lower Northern Michigan. They also volunteered with World Renew Disaster Response Services throughout the Southeastern, Central, and Southern US. Ken was an avid fisherman and hunter.

Some of Ken’s more memorable times in ministry included his first funeral for a prior church member who no longer resided in that church community, the gusty South Dakota blizzards (“Just stay put” the locals advised), and the joy and sadness of hospital ministry.

Ken is survived by his wife Sena and their five adult children: Betty and Dwight Schofield of Greenville; Mike and Barb Vander Heide of Midland; Joyce and Tom Monsma of Midland Park, NJ; Kay and Wendell Wolff of Berkeley, CA; and Diane and Bill Van Staalduinen of Washington, NC. Ken and Sena have been blessed with 21 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Beloved surviving in-laws are Julia Vander Heide, Jeanette Vander Heide, Jane Klumpenhouwer, Sylvia DeVries, Angie (Sherman) Postma, Carolyn DeVries, and brother-in-law Simon Scholtens. Ken was preceded in death by his parents; by his siblings Walter Vander Heide, Adrian Vander Heide, Bernice Vander Heide, and Harold (Marguerite) Vander Heide; and by his in-laws John Klumpenhouwer, Harold DeVries, and Pearl Scholtens.

Your prayers for the family are cherished and your presence is welcome at 1:30 P.M. Monday, August 7, 2017, at the Prosper Christian Reformed with Rev. Dirk Koetje officiating. Private burial will take place in the Riverside Township Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday, August 6, 2017, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Burkholder Family Funeral Home in McBain. Memorial contributions may be made to World Renew Disaster Relief Services. Your thoughts and prayers may be left at www.burkholderfamilyfuneralhome.com
