Harvey Winkel

Harvey Winkel, of McBain, went home to be with his Lord on April 10, 2017 at Curry House Assisted Living at the age of 87. He was born April 2, 1930 in Clam Union Township to Thomas D. and Jennie (Zuiderveen) Winkel. Harvey married Lois (Bierens) Winkel on August 30, 1952 in Clam Union Township at the Bierens’ family home.
Harvey was a deacon at the Vogel Center Christian Reformed Church; served in the military for 2 years, serving in the Korean War. He served on the Northern Michigan Christian School Board for 16 years and farmed all his working years. Harvey spent the winters in Florida, enjoyed golfing and hunting and had volunteered on several mission trips.
Harvey is survived by his wife Lois Of McBain; children Deb Hoekstra of Grand Rapids, Thomas J. (Debbie) Winkel and Jack A (Ruth) Winkel both of McBain, James Lee (Kim) Winkel of Lake City and Philip J. (Susan) Winkel of Drummond Island; grandchildren John Hoekstra, Andrew (Maribeth) Hoekstra, Tressa (James) Spaan, Jamie (Jeremy) Eling, Eric Winkel, Bryce (Ashlie) Winkel, Jessica (Andy) Benthem, Jeffery (Grace) Winkel, Nathan Winkel, Nicholas Winkel, Maxon Winkel and Joseph Winkel ; and 17 great grandchildren. He is also leaves behind his siblings Dick (Mert) Winkel of Grand Rapids and Betty DeKam of Falmouth, his in-laws John Haan of Kalamazoo and Marilyn Winkel of Bradenton, Florida.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Joanne Haan and Gordon Winkel; and brother in-law Carl DeKam.
The family would like to extend a special thank you the nurses and staff at Curry House Assisted Living and Hospice of Michigan for the special care that Harvey received.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 12 at the Vogel Center Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Adam Barton officiating. Burial will take place in Vogel Center Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-8:00 p.m. at Burkholder Family Funeral Home in McBain. Memorial contributions may be made to Vogel Center Christian Reformed Church and Northern Michigan Christian School. Thoughts and prayers for the family may be left at www.burkholderfamily
